01 / A SIMPLIFIED CHORD STUDY
The Nights gesture synth tutorial: load C, G, D and Em
To practise The Nights by Avicii on Gesture Synth, load C major, G major, D major and E minor into Four chords. Play one slot at a time with your mouse, then learn the matching left-hand shapes. This is a simplified accompaniment exercise based on a published beginner lesson. It does not reproduce the recording’s original key, melody, production or complete arrangement.
The The Nights chord lesson by Asmund Friborg lists C, G, D and Em, and its opening play-along display shows that sequence. Our exercise uses the same chord names with a deliberately slow, even bar per chord. Different lessons can transpose a song or simplify its harmony. Compare their stated version before assuming that two different chord lists are mistakes.
Load the simplified The Nights bank ↗
The link opens Sing & Play with Four chords and the 120-second recording option selected. It stays silent until you start an input mode. Check the loaded-practice banner, choose Use Mouse Mode, and listen to each button. Loading the page does not request your camera or microphone. You can also open the instrument and enter the following settings manually.
| Slot / fingers | Root | Chord | Octave | Sounding notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | C | major | 3 | C3 · E3 · G3 |
| 2 | G | major | 2 | G2 · B2 · D3 |
| 3 | D | major | 3 | D3 · F♯3 · A3 |
| 4 | E | minor | 3 | E3 · G3 · B3 |
Octave 2 on G keeps its bass below the neighbouring C and D chords. This is a voicing choice for our study, not a claim about Avicii’s instruments. Changing only that octave moves the whole G chord without changing its major quality. Start with the table before experimenting so you can distinguish a setup difference from a timing problem.
Why D major and E minor need different settings
D major contains F♯. D minor would contain F natural and sound different. E minor contains G natural; E major would add G♯. Check the Chord field rather than selecting only a root letter. If a tutorial says “Em,” the small m means minor. Our custom chord guide explains these quality and octave controls in more detail.
02 / FOUR MANUAL BARS
Learn the changes before trying to sing
Use a steady four-count for each chord. In this practice, the complete loop has four bars and sixteen quarter-note beats. At our suggested 80 BPM, each bar lasts three seconds and the loop lasts twelve seconds. Eighty is a learning tempo, not the recording’s tempo. The bank does not supply a metronome, advance the slots or synchronize with a video.
First say the chord names while counting, without making sound. Say the next name just before its bar begins, then switch on beat one. This separates remembering the order from operating the instrument. If you cannot comfortably name the next chord, slow down or practise two bars rather than adding more movement and hoping the sequence settles itself.
Three short drills with different goals
- C to G: alternate slots one and two for four counts each. Listen for the lower G bass; it should change immediately when you select it.
- D to Em: alternate slots three and four. Notice the move from a major chord to a minor one while keeping your volume steady.
- Em back to C: practise the end-to-start join, then leave one silent bar. Restarting deliberately is more useful than an endless loop with an uncertain first beat.
A short mouse click leaves a slot sounding. Click the active slot again to stop it, or select a different slot to change chords. A longer press, held for more than a quarter of a second, stops when you release it. Use short clicks for the sustained-bar exercise. Pressing and releasing too slowly can create an unintended gap between every chord.
Listen once without touching the controls, then reproduce the same four changes. Do not judge your take by whether it has the record’s electronic sound. Judge the exercise by correct chord quality, a stable pulse and a clean stop. Those checks remain useful even if you later choose another sound or transpose all four roots.
03 / ONE SHAPE PER SLOT
Move The Nights practice from mouse to hand gestures
Stop Mouse Mode before choosing Start Camera. Allow webcam access, wait for the preview, and keep both hands clearly visible. In Four chords, fold your left thumb and raise one, two, three or four non-thumb fingers for slots one through four. Here those shapes select C, G, D and Em. The number refers to a slot, not a scale degree.
Make the four shapes silently before playing. Hold one finger, then two, then three, then four; keep the thumb folded throughout. Now practise only three to four, the D-to-Em change. Prepare the next shape during the final count of the previous bar. Avoid waving the entire hand to change chords, because leaving the camera frame can interrupt the sound.
Right-hand height adjusts volume and right wrist tilt adjusts tone. Keep that hand steady while learning the left-hand sequence. For a deliberate rest, close the left hand into a fist, move a hand out of view, or press Stop. A camera gesture may take a moment to settle, so begin slower than the mouse exercise if shapes flicker.
If two adjacent slots flash repeatedly, separate the fingers, improve even lighting and hold the intended shape longer. Check that the left thumb has not unfolded. Return to Mouse Mode if you need to verify the chord itself. A correct mouse result with an unstable camera result points to the input shape or visibility rather than the chord table.
04 / A LISTENABLE CHECK
Record a short The Nights chord practice
Make the first take without a microphone: one twelve-second loop fits the 15-second option with a little room for a rest. Stop the final Em deliberately. Play the free preview and check the C–G–D–Em order, the lower G and the last chord’s minor colour. Repeat only the transition that needs work before recording again.
For your own singing, use headphones and choose Add microphone separately. Check its meter before recording; microphone permission is optional. The instrument does not supply lyrics, a vocal guide, pitch correction or the original track. Plan your own short excerpt. Sing & Play offers 15 or 120 seconds, so a complete performance is not guaranteed to fit.
Playing, recording and local preview are free without an account. Optional single-recording video export costs US$9.99 and requires sign-in; packs show their price and recording count before payment. There is no subscription. Paid or pack-unlocked recordings remain downloadable for 30 days from payment or unlock. Read the recording guide before choosing an export.
Once the four changes feel comfortable, compare the major-to-minor move in the Creep chord study. For a different counting task, the The Only Exception exercise uses grouped 6/8 counts. Keep their settings separate: a new practice link loads that lesson’s bank rather than combining both arrangements.
05 / BEFORE YOUR NEXT LOOP
The Nights gesture synth questions
Are these the original-key chords for The Nights?
No. This C–G–D–Em bank follows a simplified beginner lesson. It is a separate practice arrangement, not an exact transcription of Avicii’s recording or a complete song score.
Does the practice link play the song automatically?
No. It loads four editable chords and stays idle. Start Mouse Mode or Camera yourself, then select each slot and count the changes manually.
What fingers play C, G, D and Em?
In Four chords, fold the left thumb and raise one, two, three or four non-thumb fingers for C, G, D or Em respectively. Keep both hands visible; right-hand height controls volume and wrist tilt controls tone.
Why does G use a lower octave?
Octave 2 places G2–B2–D3 below the surrounding chords in our study. It stays G major. The other three slots use Octave 3; every slot uses Root position.
Can I follow the original recording with this bank?
Treat it as a stand-alone learning exercise. Its key and slow bar lengths are not a synchronized match to the original. The tool does not listen to a track, detect its chords or move slots automatically.
Can I try and record without paying?
Yes. Playing, recording and preview are free without an account. Sing & Play offers 15 or 120 seconds. Optional single-recording video export is US$9.99 and requires sign-in; packs display their price before payment.
