01 / THREE HARMONIES, FOUR SLOTS
How to play Bags on Gesture Synth
For this short Bags accompaniment, load F♯ major, F♯ major, A♯ minor and G♯ major into four slots. Count four beats on each slot. The repeated F♯ gives the first harmony two bars; the minor chord and the last major chord receive one bar each. You will play a finite, four-bar sustained-triad study based on a named guitar lesson, then listen back to your timing.
The practice link selects Sing & Play, Four chords and 120 seconds without starting sound, recording or a camera. Check the loaded-song banner before choosing Mouse Mode. No keyboard is needed. If configuring the instrument yourself, enter these settings and keep every Inversion at Root position.
| Slot / fingers | Root | Chord | Octave | Sounding notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | F# | major | 3 | F♯3 · A♯3 · C♯4 |
| 2 | F# | major | 3 | F♯3 · A♯3 · C♯4 |
| 3 | A# | minor | 2 | A♯2 · C♯3 · F3 |
| 4 | G# | major | 2 | G♯2 · C3 · D♯3 |
Read sounding notes rather than guitar shapes
A♯ minor is the same sounding chord as B♭ minor; G♯ major is the same as A♭ major. The tool uses sharp root labels, so choose A♯ with Chord set to Minor. In its note display, F is the sounding equivalent of E♯ in A♯ minor, and C is the equivalent of B♯ in G♯ major. Those spellings do not turn the chords into A♯ major or G♯ minor.
Some guitar charts use F–Am–G shapes with a capo at fret one. A capo raises those shapes by a semitone, sounding F♯–B♭m–A♭. A browser synth has no guitar capo: enter the sounding roots directly. Setting F, Am and G here would produce a lower version. Our root-position octaves are practical synth voicings, not a claim to match every note or register of the guitar.
02 / A NAMED TEACHING REFERENCE
Which Bags arrangement does this exercise use?
Justin Hatt’s Bags guitar lesson, published on 13 May 2020, explains F♯ major, B♭ minor and A♭ major around 2:06–2:34, with two bars on the first harmony and one on each remaining harmony. Around 3:28–4:22 he distinguishes the muted power-chord texture from fuller major and minor chords and demonstrates the rhythm.
We use that three-chord teaching interpretation and bar pattern, played as plain held triads. The study leaves out the original palm-muted attacks, strumming rhythm, guitar effects, lead lines and singing. It is not a note-for-note intro, the complete song or an arrangement of the separate Electric Lady performance. This independent tutorial has no affiliation with Clairo or the teacher.
100 BPM is our practice tempo, not a verified speed for Clairo’s recording or a setting supplied by the teacher. Keep the named version and bar lengths together when learning. If another cover sounds different, first identify its recording, section, tuning and arrangement rather than combining one lesson’s chord names with another’s timing.
03 / KEEP F♯ FOR TWO BARS
Count four bars before repeating
Use four steady beats per bar. Select slot one for bar one, slot two for bar two, slot three for bar three and slot four for bar four. The first two bars contain the same F♯ harmony. Moving to slot two marks the next bar and may create a fresh attack; it does not introduce a fourth distinct chord.
At 100 BPM, each beat lasts 0.6 seconds. The four bar starts are approximately 0, 2.4, 4.8 and 7.2 seconds; the phrase ends at 9.6 seconds. These are elapsed times in our exercise, not positions in the song or the teacher’s video. Stop after the last four counts, or deliberately restart at slot one for another cycle.
Begin at 60 BPM if necessary: one cycle then takes sixteen seconds. Count ONE, two, three, four aloud, or use a separate metronome. This bank does not supply an automatic count-in, tempo control, backing track or advancing score. Increasing speed is optional; keeping the first harmony for eight total beats is the main timing task.
Use buttons before adding camera gestures
In Mouse Mode, a quick press latches a chord. Press a different numbered slot to change, and press the active slot again to rest. Do not press slot one twice to mark bar two: that stops the sound. Choose the separate, identical slot two instead. A long press releases when you let go, so quick taps are easier for this sustained exercise. The same numbered buttons work with touch.
For camera practice, keep both hands visible. Fold the left thumb and raise one to four non-thumb fingers to select slots one to four. A left fist makes a rest. Right-hand height shapes volume and wrist tilt shapes tone. These Four chords controls differ from Melody’s pinch-to-play mapping. If the response seems wrong, check the selected mode and bank before changing your hands or editing chords.
Watch the count labels through the second F♯ bar, then listen for the minor chord beginning at bar three. The demonstration contains one cycle and silence afterwards. Its manual button presses introduce small timing differences from the ideal timestamps above; use it as a practical reference, not a synchronized recording to accompany the original track.
04 / MAKE ONE CLEAN TAKE
Record Bags practice and check the changes
Choose 120 seconds for preparation, slower counts or repeated cycles. Start Mouse Mode, press Record 2 min, count a preparation bar yourself, then play the four slots. Rest after G♯ and press Stop clip to open the preview. One 100 BPM cycle fits in the fifteen-second option, but preparation uses part of that allowance; two cycles exceed it. The longer option still needs your manual stop.
Listen for three things: whether A♯ minor arrived one bar early, whether an accidental second tap silenced F♯, and whether the ending stayed tidy. Practise the difficult transition alone before recording again. If you hear no sound, confirm that Mouse Mode has started, a slot is active and the browser and instrument volumes are audible. Use the chord settings guide to check each root and quality.
Playing, recording and full local preview are free without signing in. Optional video-file export requires sign-in and a purchase: a single export costs US$9.99, or use a qualifying existing download pack. There is no subscription. Online saving uploads the selected clip privately, with files retained for 30 days; it does not upload merely because you play. Keep your local take open while resolving an uncertain save or payment result, and check the existing order before trying again. The recording guide explains the remaining steps.
On a small screen, scroll within the instrument if you need to reach settings, and check that Record and Stop are visible before the take. Open the free preview to confirm the complete picture and sound, then return to the instrument. The phone guide covers touch practice. For another timing task, try the Sweater Weather half-bar exercise, or return to all song studies.
QUICK ANSWERS
Bags practice questions
Can I play Bags without a keyboard or webcam?
Yes, for this limited chord study. Load the bank, start Mouse Mode and use the numbered buttons with a mouse or touch. Camera practice is optional; loading the bank does not activate it.
Why are the first two slots both F♯ major?
The selected teaching pattern gives F♯ two bars. Each slot represents four beats, so slots one and two contain identical F♯ triads. Slot two marks another bar, not a new harmony.
Why do some guitar lessons show F–Am–G?
With a capo on fret one those guitar shapes sound one semitone higher: F♯–B♭m–A♭. This synth bank uses those sounding pitches, labelled F♯–A♯m–G♯. Copying the uncapped shapes would produce a lower version.
Is this the original Bags intro or the Electric Lady version?
No. It is a sustained-triad study based on the named Justin Hatt lesson. It omits the guitar texture, strumming, lead melody, effects and vocals, and does not transcribe the Electric Lady arrangement.
Will the chords advance automatically at 100 BPM?
No. 100 BPM is our practice pulse, not an automatic instrument setting. Count four beats per slot, using your own voice or a separate metronome, and change the slots yourself.
Can I record and listen back for free?
Yes. Playing, recording and the full local preview are free without an account. Select 120 seconds for preparation and repeats, then stop manually. Optional video-file export requires sign-in and a separate purchase or qualifying pack.
